Boston November 14 1680


Sr

I am honr d with yors of ye 14th of Augt & thereby Understand how much Mr Harris
mistook his Ransome, And yor Ready & charitable care to advance ye Same
proposed, what is now demanded, cannot readily be raised out of his Estate
though much more Valuable Neither have any of his friends, yt are willing
to contribute either money in England or any Certaine way, In so short a
time to procure it there, A faire opertunity Being shipd for an order for ye
Indian Corporacón money, yor supply being then thought Sufficient,
neither hath ye Collony of Conecticot any Bank or Certain Creditt To
Express their Just intentions Upon this Exigent, soe yt Except Mr Doan
Upon ye Letters now sent him Send ye Money or some otherwise be
moved with Compasion & give Credit To Conecticott Collony, or those yt
Ingaged to Mr Doan, Mr Harris must remaine in Captivity till more
effectuall means can be found for his Inlargmt The Security Tendered
To Mr Doan is good & ye Ingagemt of ye Collony of Conecticott may bee
Depended on, And if ye Interest propounded be to Short ye Ingagemt Offer'd
Mr Doan rises to 8 [per cent] which shall Certainly be made good if
Desired & paymt made in England, in two years or in this place
with allowance for Exchange, I see not how any yt have money to
spare, can more Charitably or profitably Imploy it, And if ye Security
be Doubted, It is in yor power to make it more Certaine, by obligeing
Conecticott, to what may be more Satisfactory before their business bee
Despatched, Sr pardon these p[re]sumptions, which proceed from my
zeale & Incapacity to p[er]forme what is Recomended to yor goodness and
Charity. In case Mr Doan failes one Mrs Small yt seems much
concerned for Mr Harris will waite upon you on his Behalfe

The Pacquett & papers under yor Cover are Conveyed & so many of ye Narrogan
sett propreitr s as are p[re]sent acquainted with their obligacons to yor selfe
in ye Caviat already given, & Recomendacón promised. My Lord
Culpeper when heer was pleased to acqt . himselfe with our p[re]tencóns
& petition To his Majtie , And what his Lordship thought needfull was
then p[re]pared And Duplicates given to him, ye originalls missed
Conveyance & will with this it's hoped come to Mr Doan &
Lewins hands & suddainly to yors My Lord Culpepper hath been
33 dayes upon his Voyage, he will bee able to give a p[er]fect Acctt
of ye publicke state of these Collonyes & Controversyes yt Crave
Decission If in any thing I may be Serviceable to ye Interest [under]
yor Inspection or yor selfe yor Comand will be Cheerfully entertaind
and obeyed by
